Kenya School of Government to build Ksh900m auditorium

The  Kenya School of  Government (KSG) Kabete Campus  will construct an 800-seater auditorium with nineteen lecture rooms in order to meet  the high demand  for  its programmes, the Deputy Director and Director for Finance and administration, Gerald  Wandera has said.

The Deputy Director  said KSG has Ksh900 million in reserve for the purpose that has been raised from the KSG programmes offered in its six campuses. He explained that other main buildings at the campus such as the Administration block, the Habel Nyamu Center, the Margaret Kobia and Titus Gateere Hostels had been constructed using money raised from the same source over time.

Wandera who was speaking  on Friday when closing the Strategic Leadership Development programme, (SLDP) 94/2015 for 61 participants from different National and County government Institutions at KSG said 90 per cent of its funds are not allocations from the Exchequer  Account, noting that this has been made possible because of being focused on quality products.

“Don’t shy away from investing; that is our dream –our business model – so you can do the same for your place of work to transform your organization for improved performance and better service delivery,” Wandera said. “The demand for KSG programmes has increased over the years but we are limited by space; imagine how far we would go if all our six campuses are fully in session throughout the year,” he added.

He  said KSG is a shared National resource for both the National and County governments whose mandate is to equip participants with relevant high skills and create social networks that enable them to interact and lobby for their institutions competitively.

“The Strategic Leadership Development  Programmes challenges you sufficiently to be different in your focus, to pay attention to detail so that you can propel your department to be seen as vital; when you meet as sector working groups, you are able to communicate to others that your department is the most significant”, the Deputy Director said.

The  SLDP 94/2015  gave  the school a gift  of  a Lion made of  Kisii Soapstone as its lasting legacy, to denote the Leadership qualities inculcated in the group during the August 31 to October 9 2015 programme. Commenting on this, Mr. Wandera said the gift has given the school a gift to cherish and also to draw deep insights from.

Speaking during the same occasion, the Course Coordinator, Dr. Florence Kithinji commended the 94/2015 class for its leadership qualities and cohesiveness.

Class  President, Dr. Stephen Njuguna, the Chief  Medical Officer, Kiambu County said the SLDP programme had not only improved participants’ workplace skill, it had also enhanced relationships at the family level.

The SLDP programmes were started 20 years ago to equip government officers in senior positions with requisite skills that enable them to steer government institutions with certain competencies and also create a pool from which the government can appoint office bearers in to positions of Leadership.

The six week course included: Transition from Manager to Leader, Strategic Thinking Leadership, Developing Leadership; Leadership for improvement and Culture Change Management.

The programme also included a two day Experiential Learning on Strategic Thinking and Culture Change Management facilitated by a team from the Dan Eldon Place of  Tomorrow (DEPOT), and a two-week take away Workplace Assignment. (KNA)
