Many of you would think that Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua is too old school, but the former government spokesman is cooler than you think! Speaking to Citizen Digital, the flamboyant politician opened up about growing up in abject poverty. He was once a “mjengo” guy, before his life turned around.

The governor grew up in Kibera slums in Nairobi for the better part of his childhood. His parents were poor civil servants who had a very hard time schooling him. At some point, he had to wake up early every day to try and get jobs at construction sites.
The former Jamhuri High School student was helped by missionaries to go study in the USA where he trained in journalism at the Whitworth College and later got his Masters from Eastern Washington University.

When he came back to Kenya, he got a job as a lecturer at Daystar University, before traveling to Dubai for another major gig. The Kibaki government spotted him and offered him the position of government spokesman – a position created during the Kibaki administration.
When asked about the kind of music he loves, he said he loves Hip Hop.
“I love hip hop; today’s and old skool. I listen to Drake, August Alsina, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne – he is a bit dirty, but I listen to him,” he revealed.
That’s not the only genre he listens to; there’s more to his collection.
“It would be wrong if I don’t mention Rhumba; Sauti Sol, Fally Ipupa are basically doing Afro-Rhumba.”
