A couple of weeks back, I came across a story that peaked my interest: one of the chaps behind Project X was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking. The guy, James Njenga is related to Njenga Karume and was found to be in possession of cocaine, high grade marijuana and LSD.
This completely blew my mind because two of the drugs mentioned aren’t what you would normally find about town unless you were actively immersed in circles that are known to the dealers… And make no mistake about it, there is a sub-culture that actively seek out and consume such drugs BUT from what I know, these drugs are traditionally dealt with by foreigners (read Nigerians) who for some reason like to deal out of slums.
So I made up my mind to try and find out what goes on when it comes to the consumption of these high end drugs. This is what I found out from talking to people and police officers who asked not to be mentioned:
The fact that the James Njenga was often mentioned with regard to Project X was no mistake. It’s actually a rather efficient sales tactic to gather all your consumers (and new prospects) together so you can deal without raising too many eyebrows. So if indeed he is pushing drugs, that would have been a smart move.
One simply has to organize a party for wealthy people (money only runs with money) and offer a “buffet” of drugs if you will. And such parties are apparently in plenty.
The basic rundown of it is that often the peddler will rent one of these furnished apartments for 24hrs (I had no idea this was possible), invite his clientèle and organize lasses (or ask the guests to come with women for their own entertainment) and avail the drugs -more often than not, the way they get back their money is by either charging the clientele an attendance fee or simply finding a party being thrown by a client and availing the drugs for sale.
And Kenyans have acquired an appetite for designer drugs. I managed to speak to someone who has thrown a party and availed the drugs for his friends and he mentioned that the drugs most commonly used are cocaine, MDMA/ecstasy and codeine. For those of you not in the know, codeine is what American rappers are always singing about and referring to as “dirty sprite”. It is a cocktail made of cough syrup and alcohol. This however is a favourite of college kids who need a cheap and quick way of getting high.
And just incase you have heard of women getting taken advantage of at parties, sometimes it’s down to them having imbibed drinks that had drugs in them and they had no idea and couldn’t handle the high.
This was just an introduction. Next time we will go into details of how the parties get organised, how new clients are sourced and what happens at these parties.
