The Papal visit to Africa is going to be written in history books; it will be of great significance to many especially the current generation who will live to remember his visit and soon this will be witnessed on social media under hashtags such as #TBTwiththePope #PopeinKenya. Pope Francis will be the second Pope to visit Kenya after Pope John Paul II visited the country twice in 1980 and 1995 during President Moi’s time.
The Pope will land in the country on Thursday and more than 1 million pilgrims are expected to attend the mass by the Pontiff at the University of Nairobi Grounds on November 26th. According to sources, people have started travelling from far and wide so as to get to the city in time and prepare for the Papal visit, but do the pilgrims especially villagers know the Do’s and Dont’s of the city?
Well, below are five survival tips for villagers travelling to Nairobi when the Pope is around. If you are among them or know of any, kindly inform them about this;
- Avoid hotels
Kindly avoid staying in hotels. The pilgrims travelling from other countries have already booked most of the hotels and by now, the hotel owners are overcharging so live with your Nairobi relatives for the three days to reduce expenses.
2. Avoid Nairobi con men
Kenyans will use any opportunity to make money. From hawkers selling food to those hawking Catholic attires, they will use any means to milk you all your cash so be very careful especially those who like playing “pata potea”. The city cons are ready to receive you. If you happen to be a first timer be careful or else you will be left with nothing but the clothes you are wearing on that day.
3. Avoid stepping on Kidero grass. Utashikwa na kanjo.
This is Nairobi! Observe the rules or else you will spend the three days behind the bars and you won’t be able to see the Pope. When in the city, do not step on Kidero grass or litter the streets. You will be whisked away by county askaris.
4. Carry uncooked food from upcountry in sacks
Life is very hard in the city so if you happen to have someone who has offered to accommodate you kindly carry plenty of uncooked food so as not to overburden them. Major highways will be closed and that means not many suppliers will be able to supply food.
5.Don’t eat like u are used too
You have to pay for every service in the city so please don’t eat like you are going to die the following day, unless you have the time and money to keep on visiting the City council toilets. Be yourselves guys.
