This year’s Oscar Awards have no single black nominated in the main categories. This move has sparked a heated debate as to whether there was fairness involved in making the list of nominees triggering the “Oscars So White” trend all over the globe.
Many Black actors have boycotted the Academy Awards, with the likes of Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith being vocal about it.
“How Is It Possible For The 2nd Consecutive Year All 20 Contenders Under The Actor Category Are White? And Let’s Not Even Get Into The Other Branches,” lee said.
The actor, who was awarded an honorary Oscar back in October added, “40 White Actors In 2 Years And No Flava At All. We Can’t Act?!”
Jada took to Facebook to address the issue in a video recording:
“Maybe it’s time we pull back our resources and we put them back into our communities, and we make programs for ourselves that acknowledge us in ways that we see fit, that are just as good as the so-called mainstream,” she said.
Jada’s hubby, Will Smith, delivered an electrifying performance in his latest big film role, Concussion. Idris Elba seemed to have been a big contender too, with his role as an African warlord in “Beasts of No Nation”.
I am curious to see how Lupita Nyong’o will chime in on the issue. Will she boycott the awards too having been the first Kenyan to ever win the award. Will she be bold enough to follow in the footsteps of Spike Lee?
