Most of us have quite interesting back stories. We have tales about how we became who we are and what we are. Simply put, everyone starts somewhere. However, not many are comfortable opening up about their journey to the world, for the fear of being bad mouthed.
Well, that’s not the case with XFM presenter Mike Mondo, the dude who keeps ladies glued to his show #XFMHomeRun. He’s down-to-earth, nerdy (I’ll tell you why) and a go-getter. Not many know his true life story because he’s a bit laid back.
“I always call it ‘the fluke audition’ because I was at a place called Alfajiri along Dennis Pritt road. What happened was, I went there for lunch and there was this long line of people. I wondered what the hell was going on. As the waiter was going to get my change and everything I decided to join the line and see what happens,” he said.
That’s quite unusual right? Have you ever left the waiter with your money just to find out what’s going on in the vicinity? Sit tight and get to know the outcome. He would then find out that it was a radio audition. When he told me this, I remembered when BBC mistakenly interviewed a taxi driver thinking that it was a technology expert!
Anyway, moving on, dude went on and sat with the panel and was given a challenge.
“They told me, ‘imagine that a 2pac song has ended, how would you introduce that show?’ I started doing it…” he revealed.
“That was Tupac Shakur “Dear Mama” playing right here on Hot 96, a very good evening to you…I’m Mike Mondo…” he reenacted the whole scene to me. I was moved. That’s not your typical interview!
The way he did it was impressive that he got a call from Hot 96 three days later. They wanted him to start working with station.
