How Nairobi Matatu Touts Collaborate With Thieves To Steal From Passengers

So I got into a matatu heading to Westlands from town. The 26-seater minibus was almost full, and everyone was seated except for one gentleman who had a huge bag on his back and was looking like he was about to alight on the next stage. I felt so uncomfortable sitting next to a guy who kept standing up, so I moved to another seat at the back. At this point, I wasn’t suspecting anything.

After seeing two other guys with almost similar bags at the back, I knew I had entered a wrong matatu, and it was time to be even more vigilant to make sure these people don’t rob me in broad daylight. The guy sitting next to me was also a member of the gang. He took out his phone and started showing me porn videos. I then started feeling a little bit weird. I wanted to move to another seat, but these thugs wouldn’t let me.

“Uwiiiii..wameniibia simu, hawa watu ni wezi,” one of the women who were aboard the matatu screamed. Everyone became wide-awake, and all the eight goons stood up and threatened to stab anyone who would say anything. One of them even took out his penis and showed it to the women.

On reaching Delta, these thugs alighted and walked away like nothing happened.

The funny thing is, these guys did not pay. The man who sat next to me pretended to pay the tout but didn’t. Are they working with the touts and drivers? There have been so many cases of people being drugged and stolen from on these matatus and many Nairobi touts actually know the robbers.

Check out the short video I recorded shortly after the incident.
