The much-anticipated list of the Top 40 Under 40 Men in Kenya was finally unveiled by Business Daily. This year’s edition features stellar men from a wide range of careers and occupations, from athletes to a university dean. It has also seen the return of a familiar face, one of Kenya’s youngest billionaires.
Here’s the list of these incredibly talented and brainy men who are making a positive impact in their communities, having worked hard to achieve their dreams:
1. Irungu Nyakera (33)
He was recently nominated by President Uhuru Kenyatta as Transport Principal Secretary. If he is approved, he is going to be the youngest PS in the Kenyan government. Nyakera is the Managing Director of Equity Investment Bank. He joined the company last year at a crucial time when the company was venturing into the stock brokerage business for the second time. He has managed to help the company penetrate 14% of the market within an impressive time frame. Equity CEO James Mwangi named him as his possible successor. Irungu has previously been the MD of NIC Capital, a subsidiary of NIC Bank.
2. David Rudisha (26)
David Rudisha is one of the most notable Kenyans of our current time. One of his life-defining moments came when he was among the 246 Kenyans awarded by former President Mwai Kibaki for their exemplary service to the country in December 2012. He was given a Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear MBS) after winning a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London. Despite having suffered an injury that left him out of the game for two years, he went on to win big at the recent World Championships which were held in Beijing. It was his second 800m title. He truly deserves to be on this list.
3. Musyoka M. Muthui (34)
Despite the fact that he grew up in a very humble background, he did not let get the part of his heart. He instead pressed on to be an investment banker with Barclays Capital Wallstreet. He was among the only four students – out of 120 – who managed to join university from his former high school, Mutonguni Secondary School. He has since earned various accounting qualifications from top global institutions, including University of Nairobi, Egerton University and the London School of Economics (UK). Musyoka is currently based in New York and is tasked with advising on mergers and acquisitions as well as corporate transactions in Wall Street. When he was young, he would burn and sell charcoal to pay for his fees.
4. Victor Wanyama (24)
He is one of Kenya’s most remarkable footballers of all time. The first Kenyan to play in the English Premier League, Wanyama started off playing at the dusty pitches of Kawangware here in Nairobi. He lived in a dilapidated room with his parents and siblings, but he pressed on. He won his first playing boots when he was 11 but 11 years later, in 2013, his first major European game materialized, playing for Southampton against West Brom. To give back to the community, he donated 700,000 earlier this year to AFC Leopards.
5. Ezra Chiloba (37)
He is the current CEO of IEBC, the national electoral body. Before this engagement, he was working with UNDP. The organization he is working for suffered major reputation damage following the disputed 2013 general elections. Among the strategies he has employed to revive IEBC is strengthening the finance and procurement systems as well as adopting new heads for its departments. Chiloba holds a Masters Degree in Public Policy from the Central European University as well as a Law Degree from UON.
6. Feizal Ahmed (28)
Feizal is working with one of the most recognized companies in Africa, national career Kenya Airways. He is a seasoned captain who has trained in various top aviation schools around the world. He started off with the Progress Flight Academy in South Africa, then headed to the Oxford Aviation in the United Kingdom for Boeing 737 training. He has since trained in Singapore and Amsterdam, gaining more knowledge on different aircrafts.
“I’ve always had a passion in aviation,” he told Business Daily. “It developed from my days in Mangu High School where I was an active member and official of the Aviation Club.”
Feizal gives back to the community through charity in children’s homes in Kayole and Rongai.
7. Asim Shah (31)
He runs a fast rising manufacturing company that employs more than 200 people. His speciality is the making of tents and soft roof shelters for various organizations, including NGOs, which form a major part of his client base. Tarpo Industries has allowed Asim to travel around the world, sealing deals. He credits his success acumen to his swiftness in risk taking and adoption of new ways. Asim also sits on the board for Rhino Charge, an annual driving contest aimed at raising funds to preserve the Aberdare Forest.
8. Amar Grewal-Thethy (27)
A fan of New Zealand’s All Blacks, Amar’s typical day job involves buying and selling of companies successful.
“I run the deals, drive the transactions, do all the documentation,” the seasoned lawyer says. Amar is a partner at Kaplan & Stratton Advocates. He has worked on several heavy mergers and acquisitions in East Africa, including the restructuring and listing on TransCurrency Limited on the Nairobi Securities Exchange. He has won several awards, including being named one of EMEA’s Legal 500. He has also been ranked as an ILFR 1000 rising star among other accolades.
