A 20-year-old woman was yesterday charged with attempting to extort money by threats from her “sponsor”.
Rita Akoth a model, allegedly with others not in court, with intent to extort money from Simon Gichuru, a power line constructor, accused him of having an affair with her.
She committed the offence on July 12 at Umoja Innercore in Embakasi, Nairobi.
According to the prosecution, Gichuru received a call from Akoth who was his longtime girlfriend requesting to meet him. After a lengthy call, the complainant agreed to meet her at her house the following day in the evening.
Police said the suspect kept calling the complainant as he had agreed to meet her after work around 8pm. Later that day Gichuru met her and they proceeded to her house within Umoja. She made coffee for him and went to the bedroom.
Reportedly the suspect kept on texting on her phone while the two were undressing in the bedroom. The court heard immediately the complainant got naked and before they could do anything, a man who claimed to be the husband of Akoth came in and started shouting. Three other people followed him, one carrying a camera and claiming to be a journalist.
Gichuru said he panicked as he did not expect it. The alleged husband and cameraman asked for Sh120,000 as compensation to cool the matter. The accused and his accomplices claimed that they needed the money to not leak the videos and photos to the media and to his wife. Luckily the complainant managed to call his cousin who is a police officer and tricked the accused that he was going to get the money at his hardware. The accused was arrested as the others escaped in another vehicle.
Akoth denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga, said that it was a friend who asked her to lure her “sponsor” into the act so that they can get more money. She was released on a cash bail of Sh20,000. The case will be heard on October 18.
