Last week, Lady Justice Mumbi Ngugi made a landmark ruling that all children born out of wedlock MUST have the names of their fathers included in their birth records. While delivering the ruling, following a case filed by a single mother in 2014 challenging the Births and Deaths Registration Act (which she declared unconstitutional). Justice Mumbi said that every child had a right to have the name of his or her father on the birth certificate.
The ruling, welcomed with jubilation by most Kenyan women, said the consent of the father will no longer be required when the mother of the child in question goes ahead to give out his name to be used in the certificate.

However, this didn’t go well with most Kenyan men. They went out terming the ruling as “just a way to oppress us”. They said it will be used against them by women out to drain the pockets of innocent men.
